TEACHING

I have been teaching since 2005 and I love it. It’s a wonderful way to connect with people in a unique way, and I enjoy finding the best way to work with each person in an individual way. Every person is different and it’s important to be flexible and patient with each student. I also find that I learn a lot from my students, and teaching really keeps me on my toes!

I offer 45 minute and 60 minute lessons and teach all levels and abilities, from complete beginner to very advanced/pre-professional. Currently I have students ranging in age from 7-63. I am a traditional cello teacher, but use a combination of Suzuki books and other traditional methods. I teach at my home studio in south-east Minneapolis (near Lake Nokomis). I am on faculty at Augsburg University, and have previously taught at UW River Falls and the Blake School. I have also taught at the International Cello Institute (ICI) at St. Olaf, and Northern Lights Chamber Music Festival.

TESTIMONIALS

“Jane Cords-O'Hara is a talented, detailed, and patient teaching professional. As a middle-aged adult learner, I started to learn the cello with her only five years ago, with no music reading skills. Jane met me where I was, and has taught me to not only play the cello confidently, but to read music fluently. She encourages and challenges with patience, grace and kindness and continually inspires her students to strive for quality over quantity. Her attention to detail is what continues to make me a better player.”   Elena G, adult student

“I love having Jane as my cello teacher. She is funny and kind and I look forward to my lesson each week. She always pays attention to positives and celebrates success. She is patient and breaks down difficult sections so I can get them. I feel proud of my skills as a cellist thanks to Jane being a great teacher.” Irene S. student, age 11

“I have been working with Jane since I started playing cello 6 years ago. Under her guidance, I have advanced to playing professional level repertoire. Jane does a great job teaching the technical elements of playing cello, and, most importantly how to turn the notes on the page into something musical. That is my favorite part of working with Jane.” Kevin B. student, age 17
